I used to work at a warehouse for a certain furniture company. It was hell, all because the boss man would throw his weight around and make people feel like crap if they made a mistake. Some days were better than others, but really it’s not something to look forward to. I busted my tail and I couldn’t even get a five cent raise.

I would think the biggest difference between freelancing and working for someone else is that your income potential is unlimited but you require much more discipline so that you can manage yourself properly. I’ve finally decided to get to work on a portfolio/blog after discovering I liked working with code. I naturally dig art so web design and graphic design are elements I’ll incorporate into my own business but I’d like to master programming more than anything else to be honest. Besides, working for yourself is fun! That’s the best thing about it. Companies that want creative professionals want experience, experience you’re unlikely to get from low level jobs. The only thing I valued at my past job was medical insurance, but that really is a big issue. Provided I get insurance that covers me sufficiently without an in-house job, I may consider full time freelancing as it’s something I take serious but I still want an in-house programming job in the future. I’m in school for computer science but companies really do want two or more years with school education.
