Why did you choose to become a freelancer? Money, the idea of becoming your own boss, wanting a sense of independence? These are all reasons why you may have become a freelancer (or are looking to become one), but why not take it a step further? As a freelancer, you get a much greater sense of freedom in your work. You can choose when to work, how to work and who to work for, but you’re still ‘working’ for someone, and sometimes it can get a little frustrating when things are not going according to plan.
We’d all much rather work for ourselves than someone else. So, the ultimate aim should be what? Total financial independence, working on something that you enjoy every minute of – and that means working on your own business separate from freelancing, yes, I’m talking about your own web projects.
As a freelancer, you’re always working on another person’s project, whether that be designing a website for it, coding the design, or writing copy for it. Yes, you’re going to get paid at the end of your part of it, but you’re working towards the progress of their web project, their idea, their vision. Instead of that, why don’t you take advantage of your skills for your own progress?
But what can I do?
There’s a whole plethora of things you could do. Let’s say, for example, you’re a freelance PHP/mySQL coder. You could try making a web script that proves useful to a certain niche, and solves a selection few problems that those groups of people may have. In return, you could offer access to the script on a subscription-base, or maybe sell copies of the script on a website. That way, you are furthering you’re own progress individually, as an entrepreneur, and taking advantage of the skills you’ve developed over time.
OK, let’s say you’re not a PHP/mySQL coder, but you can design templates for websites well, but can’t code them. Well, there are a ton of options for you in that avenue as well. You could sell copies of a template you’ve created online, using various websites that already exist as your platform to sell. Specialize in icon design? There’s options for that too.
Conclusion
Too many times have I experienced freelancers putting in way too much effort into their clients’ projects, and with good cause, but they fail to keep a little time a side (even a few hours a week) just to work on their own project, that can bring them a good, sustainable, recurring income – and best of all, be work that they enjoy doing.
